Cape Town – A business director has responded to load shedding by giving his staff a challenge, explaining that in South Africa "earth hour is now every hour”.
Fin24 user Peter du Preez said that “rather than burying our heads in the sand, I’ve challenged my employees this morning to create a campaign within our company of ‘Going Old School’.”
The director of Tag South Africa said his company will be designing a campaign with a website to share ideas of what it means to be old school.
“This refers to ideas of how to proactively get off the grid without being kicked off during load shedding,” he said.
“If you receive any similar ideas it would be helpful to get like-minded people in a meeting room to co-ordinate a social movement where people share ideas with their friends via social media, showing each other how they are being proactive.
“This could be as simple as energy efficient food preparation [which can be published in a] recipe book."
Du Preez was responding to an opinion piece on Fin24 calling for ideas for businesses to adapt their business models and consumers to lessen their power usage to ease demand, thus limiting the need for or intensity of load shedding.

“I’m encouraged to read your article after spending the past few weeks planning what to do should we have a blackout,” he said.
“The reality is that the consequences of a blackout are just too severe as our government has not acknowledged the problem, as they are sharing very little information on what citizens should do should we find ourselves in this predicament.
"We need to realise that in South Africa earth hour is now every hour.”
