Cape Town - In many communities in South Africa, finding three generations under one roof is the rule rather than the exception, and it would be frowned upon if you did not provide your parents with a place to stay if they needed it.
There is an expectation especially in black communities that older people will be cared for by family, according to the 2012 ILC Global Alliance Report on Multi-generational households.
There is, however, a growing trend towards nuclear family households (two-generational) in urban areas in SA according to the report mentioned above.
