Guptas buy $30m mansion in Dubai, says City Press

Johannesburg - The Gupta family, friends of President Jacob Zuma, bought a R445m ($30m) residence in the Emirates Hills section of Dubai, the City Press newspaper reported, citing two unidentified people.

The home has 10 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, nine reception rooms and space for 11 cars, the Johannesburg-based newspaper reported on Sunday. Gupta family spokesperson Gary Naidoo told City Press he won’t be providing “running commentary on the Gupta family. They, like any family, have a right to privacy and a family life." Naidoo confirmed the Guptas bought a house in Dubai when called for comment on Sunday.

The 40 804 square-foot Emirates Hills property was listed in March 2015 as “awaiting a VVIP .... with deep pockets,” according to City Press. It is decorated in marble and gold and has a double grand staircase, hand-painted dome and chandeliers in almost every room, it said.

The Hawks are investigating whether the Guptas have any influence on government business. Atul Gupta and Varun Gupta resigned their positions at Johannesburg-listed Oakbay Resources and Energy, the company said in April. The announcement came after financial services groups including accounting firm KPMG and Absa unit dropped some Gupta-controlled businesses as clients.
