Pretoria - The SA Revenue Service came within a whisker of its 2009 tax targetby collecting a total of R625.57bn by midnight on Tuesday, said Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.
He said on Wednesday the preliminary result was 0.34% below
the revised February 2009 Budget estimate of R627.69bn.
This represented a 9.2% growth in revenue collection over
last year.
"In my estimates that is an exceedingly good pass rate for Sars," Manuel told journalists in Pretoria via a video-link from London.
In anticipation of the economic downturn, the revenue target was adjusted downwards in February from R642.27bn to R627.69bn.
"The current conditions resulted in a collection of R625.57bn or 99.66% of the target."
