Johannesburg - As far as vocations go, entrepreneurship is by far the most popular option among South African youth.
The latest Generation Next study has found that 37.5% of teenagers and young adults plan to start their own enterprises. This research is undertaken each year by HDI Youth Marketeers in collaboration with the Sunday Times.
Young adults consider the "coolest" job to be that of an entrepreneur (20.4%) and the next most aspired to that of a chief executive (16.1%).
The favourite vocational choice for teenagers and young children is acting.
But they tend to become more realistic as they get older, says Jessica Oosthuizen, a research journalist with HDI Youth Marketeers.
Influences determining young adults' choice of vocations are, in order of importance: a good reputation, a big salary, the opportunity to travel a lot, a job that inspires you to achieve more and, finally, truly South African companies that invest in South Africa.
About 64% of young adults use their cellphone to access the internet every week, and many more have cellphones (87.2%) than televisions (79.9%) at home.
Although some youth have realised that their households are experiencing financial pressure, a number report that buying habits have not been affected so far.
The presentation of the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament is the principal reason for 59.7% of the respondents' positive attitude about South Africa. Music, art and local talent come second (28.9%).
