Johannesburg - Township businesses in Gauteng are expected to get a R53.6m boost in the next twelve months, according to the province's department of economic development.

In his budget speech on Monday, Gauteng's MEC for finance and economic affairs, Paul Mashatile, said the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) will roll out what it calls the Township Business Renewal Programme this financial year (2008/09).

"This programme will be undertaken as part of the Gauteng Twenty Priority Programme, which seeks to improve infrastructure in 20 old, established townships across Gauteng," said Mashatile.

Mashatile said businesses in these townships would be targeted for assistance through various financial and non-financial support mechanisms.

During the current financial year, GEP will also introduce a black franchisors development programme, according to Mashatile, who said that the programme will "fast-track the involvement of black entrepreneurs in the franchising industry".

It also aims to identify small businesses that have a potential to be franchised and promote women franchising opportunities, he said.

"GEP will further package and implement a start up capital fund to focus on providing funding products in the category of R200 000 to R500 000," he said, adding that this is an area that currently isn?t adequately catered for by other funding agencies.

Mashatile also said that the R57mn received by the Gauteng Economic Development Agency (Geda) would help that agency to focus on attracting investment to specific projects that have been identified as critical to the achievement of the provincial government's priorities.

"Geda will continue to attract investment into strategic sectors of the Gauteng economy such as creative industries, value added manufacturing, logistics and energy generation," he said.
