A Fin24.com user writes: I own a small (micro) manufacturing business with a monthly turnover of about R30 000.00 a month.

I started the business about four years ago and have been paying an accountant R1 200 a month to do the books.

Is this necessary for a business of this size?

What other options do I have?

Kobus Engelbrecht, marketing manager of Sanlam Cobalt, answers:

It is definitely necessary to have updated business records at all times.

A quick search on the internet shows that you can buy the accounting software you need for less than R1 000.This will enable you to do your own books and effect a cost saving of R13 400 in the first year and R14 400 per year thereafter.
