Johannesburg - A 66-year-old mining businessman on Thursday appeared in the
Welkom Regional Court on charges of tax fraud involving R20
million, said the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Spokesperson Malerato Sekha said in a statement that Jan Marthinus
Stevens was released on R10 000 bail after the court took into
account that he was a pensioner and had a fixed place of residence.
Stevens was arrested on Wednesday for suspected Income Tax and
VAT contraventions relating to the company Stevens Specialised
Mining after the Specialised Tax Unit (STU) of the National
Prosecutions Authority issued a warrant of arrest.
Sekha said SARS investigators probed Stevens after an audit
indicated "certain" irregularities.
The case was then handed over to the STU in Bloemfontein for
prosecution.
Stevens' case was postponed to October 27.
