A Fin24 user is not sure if she would be able to buy a house, because she earns R3 600 per month. She writes:
I'm a single mother of two girls and I earn R3 600 per month. I would love to own a house.
I have never bought a house or taken out a loan before.
I would like to know if I qualify for a government subsidy. Where must I go to apply and what must I take with me? Please help.
Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, responds:
Thank you for your query about subsidised housing.
The City of Cape Town is pleased to inform you of our Gap Housing opportunities, for which you may qualify.
Gap housing is for people who typically earn between R3 500 and R15 000 per month.
This, however, does not guarantee eligibility, as the application is subject to obtaining a bond from a bank to purchase a house, dependent on the sale price.
Purchases are done directly with the developer. You can contact the developer of a specific development or visit your nearest housing office for more information.
Alternatively, contact the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089 or visit its website.
