Johannesburg - The total number of civil summonses issued for debt increased 13% between April 2009 and April 2010, Statistics SA said on Thursday.

The three months ended April 2010 reflected a 1.6% increase in the total number of civil summonses issued for debt compared with the three months ended April 2009.

The major contributors to the 1.6% increase were civil summonses issued for money lent (contributing 5.2 percentage points); professional services (contributing half a percentage point); and promissory notes and other acknowledgements of debt (contributing 0.3 of a percentage point).

The Pretoria-based agency said the total number of civil judgements recorded for debt increased 11.6% between April 2009 and April 2010.

The total number of civil judgements recorded for debt for the three months ended April 2010 increased 1.6% compared with the three months ended April 2009.

The main drivers behind the 1.6% increase were civil judgements for promissory notes and other acknowledgements of debt  (contributing 4.6 percentage points);
money lent (contributing 2.3 percentage points); and rent (contributing 0.2 of a percentage point).

Statistics SA said there was a decrease of 4.8 percent in the total value of civil judgments recorded for debt between April 2009 and April 2010.

There was, however, an increase of 4.4% in the total value of civil judgements recorded for debt for the three months ended April 2010 compared with the three months ended April 2009.

The major contributors to the 4.4% increase were the money lent category (contributing 2.9 percentage points), the other services category (contributing 1.2 percentage points)  and the professional services category (contributing 1.0 percentage point).

Two categories that contributed negatively  were other debts (contributing -1,7 percentage points) and goods sold on an open account (contributing -0.4 of a percentage point).

During April 2010, 61 933 civil judgements for debt amounting to R532m were recorded, Statistics SA said.

The largest contributors to the R532m were money lent (R190.5m or 35.8%); goods sold (R85m or 16.0%); services (R84.9m or 16.0%; and other debts (R81.2m or 15.3%).
