Johannesburg - Around 20 000 customers of vehicle finance provider Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (MBFS) found themselves in the red at the beginning of December, the company said on Friday.
MBFS admitted in a statement it had double debited the accounts of some customers due to an IT problem.
Company spokesperson Annelise van der Laan told Sapa the problem received top priority.
"We sincerely regret the inconvenience to our customers and are doing everything possible to refund customers the 'second' debit as quickly as possible.
"Where banking costs have been incurred by our customers as a direct result of our error, and upon presentation of substantiating documentation, these monies are also being repaid as fast as possible," she said.
Van der Laan confirmed that the technical glitch had been attended to and most affected customers had been contacted.
"It is regrettable that this error occurred and we are doing everything possible to minimise the impact on our customers and avoid a recurrence," she said.
