Johannesburg - The SA Revenue Service has called on all taxpayers who receive a travel allowance to record their 2009/10 odometer readings not later than Sunday.
"The last day of February marks the end of the tax year for individual taxpayers," said spokesperson Malerato Sekha in statement.
Those seeking to claim a business travel deduction in their income tax return are required to record their vehicles opening and closing mileage for each tax year on March 1 and the last day of the following February respectively.
Sekha said several changes relating to travel allowances had been introduced for the 2010/11 tax year.
From the March 1 2010 all taxpayers who use their personal vehicles for business would be required to complete a logbook separating business mileage from that of private mileage in order to claim travel expenses.
"Also, the portion of the monthly travel allowance that will be taxed upfront, and subject to Pay As You Earn (PAYE), will rise from 60% to 80%."
Sekha said logbooks would be available from Sars branch offices countrywide from March 1, 2010.
Taxpayers can also download e-logbooks from Sars websites - www.sars.gov.za and on sarsefiling.co.za.
