A Fin24.com user asks:

How many unit trusts are currently on offer by SA financial institutions ? and how many of these showed a positive return for the past year, two years and five years?

Also, how many are beating inflation?

The Association for Savings and Investment SA responds:

As at the end of March 2009, there were 891 collective investment scheme (CIS) funds - previously known as unit trust funds - in the industry. Of these 891 funds, 611 were available to the retail investor.

Of these 611 funds, 524 funds had a one-year track record, while 112 of these showed a positive return.

Of the 611 funds, 454 funds had a two-year track record, while 127 of the 454 funds showed a positive return.

And of the 611 funds, 264 had a five-year track record. Of the 264, 262 funds showed a positive return.

How many of these beat inflation?

Headline consumer inflation (CPI) over the year to March was 8.47%, while it was 9.49% over two years and 6.26% over five years (all annualised).

Of the 524 funds with a one-year track record, 63 outperformed the 8.47%.

Of the 454 funds with a two-year track record, 43 outperformed the 9.49%.

Of the 264 with a five-year track record, 234 outperformed 6.26%.

- The Association for Savings and Investment SA represents the majority of SA's asset managers, collective investment scheme management companies, linked investment service providers, multi-managers, and life insurance companies.
