New trading record set on the JSE

Johannesburg - The JSE recorded the highest number of trades ever traded in the exchange's 123-year history on Friday, surpassing its previous record set only two days before.

The new trading record of one hundred and eighty nine thousand two hundred and fifty three trades (189 253) was valued at more than R30bn.

One hundred and eighty four thousand three hundred and thirty six trades (184 336) trades valued at more than R20bn were executed on the exchange last Wednesday.

The total number of trades on the exchange for last week was also a record 751 381 trades toppling the previous record of 535 883 set in October 2008 in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis.

"This record trading week is due to increased global uncertainty, both in Europe and the United States. This fear in the marketplace leads to increased volatility and increased trading activity," said Leanne Parsons, head of equities trading at the JSE.
