New York - Shares of Nike slumped on Wednesday on disappointing sales due in part to the strong dollar as US stocks fell modestly in early trade.
About 25 minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 17 537.85, down 44.72 points (0.25%).
The broad-based S&P 500 dropped 6.69 (0.33%) to 2 043.11, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 22.87 (0.47%) to 4 798.79.
Dow member Nike fell 4.2% after reporting that third-quarter sales were $8bn, below the $8.2bn expected by analysts. The results raised concerns about the sneaker and sports apparel giant ahead of a heavy summer season for sports that includes the 2016 Olympics.
Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare said overall enthusiasm for stocks has been constrained by expectations that the market is due for "a period of consolidation after such a big run" over the last six weeks or so.
Gilead Sciences fell 2.6% after a California jury ruled that rival drug company Merck should be able to seek royalties for Gilead's profitable Sovaldi drug for hepatitis C. Dow member Merck rose 0.7%.
General Mills fell 0.5% as third-quarter sales of $4bn came in a bit below the $4.1bn projected by analysts. The food giant cited the drag from the strong dollar and the impact of divesting its Green Giant frozen vegetables brand.
Software company Red Hat lost 3.1% as it reported fourth-quarter earnings of $53m, up 10.4% from the year-ago period. However, Briefing.com said the company's $764m in billings came in a bit below expectations.
