New York - US stocks surged on Tuesday after companies including IBM, Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo reported strong second-quarter profits.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 201.43 points (1.63%) to stand at 12 586.59 in closing trade.
The broader S&P 500 jumped 21.18 points (1.62%) to 1 326.62, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rallied 61.41 points (2.22%) to 2 826.52.
IBM helped boost the Dow index of 30 blue-chip stocks, the tech giant's shares rising 5.7 percent after reporting that its net income rose eight percent to $3.7bn in the second quarter.
Soft drinks giant Coca-Cola gained 3.3% after it reported that profits rose 18 percent in the second quarter, better than expected, on solid volume growth worldwide.
