New York - US stock markets were mixed but mostly lower on Tuesday, giving up a bit of the ground they gained during a strong five-day rally last week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 12.15 points (0.10%) to 12 570.62 in closing trade.
The broader S&P 500 dropped 1.60 points (0.12%) to 1 338.07, but the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 10.03 points (0.36%) to 2 826.06.
US markets were closed on Monday because of the July 4 Independence Day holiday. Before the holiday, Wall Street enjoyed its strongest week in two years, with the Dow surging 5.4% in five days.
