Johannesburg - The rand was trading in a range by midday on Tuesday tracking a softer single currency.

At 11:33 the rand was bid at R7.4219 to the dollar from R7.3868 at its previous close. It was bid at R10.0763 to the euro from its previous close of R10.0756 and was at R11.0802 against the sterling from R11.1210.

A local trader said: "The rand is in a range of R7.36-R7.46 against the dollar, with selling interest at the upper levels of that range.

"The euro has come off a bit against the dollar."

Dow Jones Newswires reported that in the European foreign exchanges, the euro was lower against the dollar, as speculators took profits before the US-Greece meeting.

At 09:20 GMT, the euro was trading at $1.3598, down from $1.3634 in late New York trade on Monday. The dollar was at ¥89.76, down from ¥90.31. Sterling extended Monday's losses against the dollar, and fell to $1.4979 from $1.5066 in late New York trade, dragged lower by the prospects of a hung UK parliament in the forthcoming elections.
