Johannesburg - The rand weakened to nearly 1% against the dollar on Thursday after the central bank decided to keep its benchmark lending rate unchanged at 5.5%.
The rand fell to R7.7486/$ after the rates decision, from R7.7325/$ before Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus began her speech.
Government bonds were little changed, with the yield on the 2015 benchmark bond nudging down half a basis point to 8.465%.
