Johannesburg - The rand was mostly flat on Friday as worries of labour unrest were raised on the one-year anniversary of when police shot dead 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine, in the deadliest security incident since apartheid ended in 1994.
At 09:19, the rand was at R9.977, largely unchanged from Thursday's New York close of R9.974.
"People are very nervous. A year later we still have a lot of labour issues surrounding the mining sector," said Ion de Vleeschauwer, a trader at Bidvest Bank.
Economists have said simmering labour strife in the crucial mining and manufacturing sectors poses long-term risks for Africa's largest economy.
Workers in the auto sector said they planned to go on strike from Monday, which is likely an industry that has seen continued consumer demand.
Yields rose one basis point on the three year note to 6.160% and to 8.415% on the longer dated paper maturing in 2026.
