Johannesburg - The rand put on a lacklustre performance against the dollar in Monday
afternoon trade which dealers described as "very thin," as many market
players had already started their festive breaks.
"It really is quiet and volumes are so thin. The rand keeps
eyeing the euro - it's not really focused on the death of Kim Jong-Il," a
local currency trader said, referring to the demise of the North Korean
leader which occurred on Saturday.
At 18:00 local time, the rand was bid at R8.3716 to the dollar
from its previous close of R8.3776. It was bid at R10.8981 to the euro
from R10.9254 before, and at R12.9911 against sterling from R13.0076
previously.
The euro was bid at US$1.3016 from its previous close of US$1.3036.
Meanwhile Dow Jones Newswires reported that safe-haven demand
for dollars eased off in European trading on Monday after the surprise
death of North Korea's leader had rattled Asian markets.
However, the euro failed to make much headway as eurozone
credit concerns continued to nag ahead of a telephone conference of
European finance ministers.
