Johannesburg - The rand clawed back ground against the dollar on Thursday after earlier skidding to fresh multi-year lows.
This followed a day after a domestic rate hike that the market said fell short of monetary tightening in other emerging economies.
The rand came off a session low of R11.3900/$, its softest since late 2008.
It was trading 1.26% firmer at R11.1775/$ by 16:18 GMT, 1.3% firmer than Wednesday's close.
