Tokyo - The dollar fell to a fresh 15-year low against the yen on Tuesday, sliding to ¥84.60 in Tokyo trading hours.
The drop took the dollar below its previous major low of ¥84.73, which it struck on August 11. The euro also plunged to nearly a nine-year low against the yen of ¥106.83.
The strength of the Japanese currency hit domestic shares, with the Nikkei index closing below the 9 000-point level for the first time since May 2009.
Japanese finance minister Yoshihiko Noda was scheduled to give a press conference Tuesday in Tokyo, Dow Jones Newswires reported.
