Johannesburg - The South African rand continued to firm against the US dollar in midday trade on Tuesday, amid a gold price that broke the $1 000/oz level for only the third time.
The rand traded at its best level for 16 months.
At 11:38 it was bid at 7.5264 to the dollar from 7.5719 at its previous close. It was bid at 10.8570 to the euro from its previous close of 10.8649 and was at 12.4325 against sterling from 12.3745.
The euro was bid at $1.4435 from $1.4338 overnight.
Gold broke above the $1 000/oz level in early trade and was last at $1 005.25/oz.
A local trader said: "The current gold price is leading the upside. We need to break R7.49 against the dollar to see any further momentum, with a high of R7.58 in the short term."
