Johannesburg - South African bonds were mostly weaker in midday trade Thursday.
"We are quite a bit weaker, obviously with the rand a touch
higher, but it sounds as though there's been some offshore selling - so I
think there's been some profit taking from that side. The locals have
been pretty quiet," a trader said.
At 11:50, the benchmark R157 bond was trading at 6.595%, from
its previous close of 6.570%. The R207 was bid at 7.785% and offered at
7.810% from a previous close of 7.745% and the R186 was trading at
8.260% from its close of 8.215%.
The rand was bid at 7.5831 against the dollar from its previous close of 7.5583.
Foreigners were net sellers of R1.334bn of South African
bonds including repo transactions on Wednesday after net purchases of
R1.499bn of local bonds on Tuesday, data released by the JSE
shows.
Nominal cumulative volume was R23.910bn on Wednesday from R213.489bn on Tuesday.
Foreigners were net sellers of R1.336bn of South African
bonds excluding repo transactions on Wednesday after net purchases of
R1.496bn of local bonds on Tuesday.
For the year to date foreigners have been net buyers of R9.262bn of local bonds, excluding repo transactions. In 2011 they were
net buyers of R47.359bn worth of local bonds, excluding repo
transactions.
In the year to date foreigners have been net buyers of R8.436bn of local bonds including repo transactions. In 2011 they bought
R37.501bn of local bonds.
