Tete, Mozambique - Mozambique President Armando Guebuza inaugurated a coal mining project on Friday to be run by Brazilian company Vale, the world's second largest mining firm.
Exploration for coal at the Moatize mine in the northwestern province of Tete will start in December 2010. The project will cost $1.3bn and 26m tons of coal will be produced annually, the company said.
"We want these resources to continue contributing in a sustainable way to the improvement of the living conditions of our marvelous people," Guebuza said.
The Brazilian company, which is the leading global producer of iron ore, has invested $7m in social projects in health, agriculture and education sectors in the area.
