Johannesburg - Nintendo, which manufactures the Wii video game console, announced on Thursday precisely how many of its consoles have been sold in South Africa to date.
The Xbox 360 has so far sold the most - 72 000 units since October 2006.
Nintendo is quickly catching up, and since its release in October last year has sold about 68 000 Wiis.
According to Core Group CE RJ van Spaandonk, by Christmas total sales of Wii in South Africa will surpass those of the Xbox 360.
About 45 000 Sony PlayStation 3 units have been bought in South Africa since March.
Van Spaandonk says that, despite the economic downturn, Nintendo's sales of the Wii and the smaller DS have risen 41% this year.
He points out that the video game market has changed dramatically since the Wii's introduction. A new market of "weekend", rather than "hardcore" players, is being exploited by console manufacturers.
Nintendo expects there to be more weekend players than hardcores throughout the globe next year.
"This means that one's grandmother has now started to play video games," states Van Spaandonk.
