London - A major British holiday firm suspended flights to Mexico on Tuesday, and said it would begin repatriating travellers, as the death toll from suspected swine flu cases there topped 150.
The decisions by Thomson and sister company First Choice followed advice from governments including Britain for nationals to avoid all but essential travel to the central American country.
Thomson Airways cancelled two flights bound for Mexico on Tuesday morning - a service from London's Gatwick airport to the coastal city of Cancun, and another from the northwestern city of Manchester, also to Cancun.
The firm added that repatriation flights were due to start during the day.
"While we do appreciate that the new news may be a great disappointment to customers, we hope they will also understand that their health and safety is of paramount importance to us," the company said in a statement.
Rival tour companies Thomas Cook and Airtours, which jointly have about 3 000 holidaymakers in Mexico at present, were expected to make similar decisions, media reports said.
Two people who had recently returned from Mexico to Britain were confirmed on Monday as having swine flu, amid fears that the outbreak could become a global pandemic.
