London - BAA, operator of Britain's main airports, said Monday that passenger traffic fell in July compared with a year earlier but was showing signs of stabilisation after sharp falls due to the
economic slowdown.
"BAA's UK airports recorded further signs of stabilising traffic
figures with the results for July," the Spanish-owned operator said
in a statement.
BAA airports handled 14.5 million passengers last month, down
2.4% compared with July 2008, following falls of 5.9%
in June and 7.3% in May.
London Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, handled 6.5 million
passengers in July, up 0.9% on the same month in 2008.
BAA is owned by the Spanish construction group Ferrovial, which
is in the process of selling London Gatwick airport after being
ordered to do so by Britain's competition watchdog.
