Nobel-winning economist dies

San Diego - Nobel Prize-winning economist Clive W.J. Granger has died in San Diego.

Granger, a native of England, died on Wednesday, according to a news release from the University of California, San Diego, where he was a professor emeritus. He was 74. The university did not name a cause of death.

Granger and his colleague Robert Engle won the Nobel Prize in 2003 for their work in financial statistics, which revolutionised the way economists analyse data by showing that relationships between factors such as money supply and national income change over time.

The new models the two men established had "become indispensable tools not only for researchers, but for analysts on financial markets," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said when it gave Granger the prize.
