Los Angeles - Los Angeles school authorities said on Tuesday they were sending layoff warning notices to some 9 000 employees in view of a $718bn shortfall in the year's school budget.
"This is a precautionary notice. It is not an actual notice," Los Angeles Unified School District Board Superintendent Ramon Cortines told a public board meeting, alluding to a state law about notifying by March 15 any layoffs planned for July.
He said the board would likely have a "better understanding" of the district's financial picture by the end of July, including the benefits of federal stimulus funds.
"I believe we will be able to right the district long before July" and that the district won't be sending as many layoff notices, Cortines said.
The meeting was interrupted by several members of a teachers' union wearing red shirts who sat down in front of the board, changing and holding up signs saying, "Students lose when we lose teachers, no layoffs."
