Addis Ababa - European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso predicted South Africa would use the football World Cup to take its development to new levels.
"I am sure that South Africa and the whole African continent will make the best out of it," he told reporters in Addis Ababa, three days before the first ever World Cup on African soil kicks off in Johannesburg.
Barroso was in the Ethiopian capital on a one-day visit to hold talks with African Union officials.
"As the eyes of the world turn to South Africa, I sincerely believe that after the World Cup, the country will go from strength to strength. This legacy will not only see major improvements in the country's infrastructure," he said.
The Portuguese official said he would support his Cristiano Ronaldo-led country during the tournament but expressed hope that the finals would be the "most entertaining tournament with free flowing football".
