Gaborone - Botswana's gross domestic product declined by 20.3% in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the same period last year as mining output fell, the Central Statistics Office said on Friday.

"(The) mining and quarrying industry contributed most to the decline at 68.6% ... Water and electricity industry also recorded a decrease of 4.0% during the first quarter of 2009 compared with the first quarter of 2008," the agency said in a statement.
