San Francisco - Canadian smartphone manufacturer Research in Motion has announced an advertising platform for applications on its BlackBerry devices.
The company launched the system at its annual conference in San Francisco on Monday.
Following the launch of competitor Apple's iAds platform Research in Motion said that the “BlackBerry Advertising Service” helps developers of applications to integrate advertising quickly and easily while also allowing advertisers, agencies and brands to work with a broad selection of advertising networks.
Said Alan Brenner, senior vice president for the BlackBerry platform, "With this service application developers can quickly deploy advertising and make money. It reduces the commercial and technical complexity of enabling ads within an application and offers developers a new avenue of monetisation."
Michael Becker, managing director of the Mobile Marketing Association for North America (MAA), said that his organisation has approved the BlackBerry Advertising Service.
He added that the MAA was happy that the market continues to evolve providing advertisers, agencies and brands with multiple options for mobile advertising that has become a big business.
Developers who make use of the service will earn 60% of the advertising revenue generated through advertising in their applications.
Added Brenner, "This new service not only brings new channels of revenue to our developer community but also provides them with a single relationship through RIM to simplify the commercial and technical complexity of mobile advertising."
BlackBerry applications are sold through RIM's AppWorld application store which recently made paid-for content available in South Africa.
