No longer necessary to spend

FEARS THAT HOTELS and airlines would push through exorbitant price hikes over the June/July school holidays on the back of the Fifa Soccer World Cup appear to have been premature. In fact, there’s now great value to be had for South African travellers, especially those planning a trip to Cape Town and Durban where demand from overseas soccer fans hasn’t materialised to the extent originally anticipated. Some hotels are offering rooms for selected periods in June/July for as little as a third of their normal rack rates.

Discount airline kulula.com has also come to the party, currently selling tickets online for selected departures between 1 June and 30 September from R299 (one way, including taxes) between Johannesburg and Durban and from R399 between Johannesburg and Cape Town and Durban and Cape Town.

Travel portal GoTravel24 has various package deals on offer to Durban, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route from R999/person sharing for selected departure dates in June/July. The price includes air tickets (and all airport taxes), accommodation for two nights at selected three- and four-star Protea and Southern Sun Hotels as well as car hire for two days.

Thompsons Tours has equally good deals available. For example, at the four-star Bantry Bay Luxury Suites on Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard a two-night package is up for grabs at R639/person sharing (self-drive) or R2 289/person sharing, including flights from Johannesburg plus car hire.

Flight Centre has a special family package deal available at the swanky five-star One & Only Cape Town hotel at the V&A Waterfront. Two-night family packages during the school holidays cost R3 900/adult plus R1 950 for two children sharing a second room. That includes breakfast, transfers to the airport and a 50-minute massage.

At the new five-star Taj Hotel in Cape Town’s CBD, rooms are selling from R3 025/person sharing for two nights, including breakfast. The five-star Fairmont Zimbali Lodge, near Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal, currently has a special two-night rate on offer at R2 320/person sharing, including bed and breakfast, plus a R250 dinner voucher per day (self-drive).

For those looking for a break further afield, Mauritius seems to be an obvious choice. Beachcomber Tours is advertising seven-night packages at their four- and five-star resorts from R10 630/person sharing (excluding taxes) valid for travel between 11 June and 10 July. Naiade Holidays’ “soccer escape” packages at various three- to five-star Mauritian resorts start from R8 499 (all inclusive).
