French collaboration making a difference in Mitchells Plain

Cape Town - Youth and women entrepreneurs now have access to much needed skills and business development support on their doorstep in Mitchells Plain.

This is the result of a new partnership established between SA Business Resources Institute (Sabri) and Alliance Francaise in Mitchells Plain.

Sabri has achieved significant socio-economic impact on the Cape Flats since the company’s inception in 2011 through a hands-on approach to entrepreneurial development. Sabri first established a partnership with Le Comptoir de l’innovation (CDI), a French NGO operating in Paris and deploying post-graduate students to incubators and grassroots development programmes in various countries.

CDI joined hands with Sabri in their Eco-Connect programme, focusing on skills development and presenting aspirant entrepreneurs with turnkey business opportunities such as waterless care wash systems, bakeries operating wood-fired ovens and solar-powered barber kits. The programme offers workshops and training to prepare young entrepreneurs and a hands-on approach to helping them establish and run the businesses.

Through the partnership with CDI, Sabri was introduced to Alliance Francaise in Mitchells Plain (AFMP) at a time when AFMP was looking for a new tenant. The Alliance Française is an independent, not-for-profit language and cultural organisation promoting Franco-South African exchange since 1959. It forms part of a network of 1 040 Alliances Françaises based in 136 countries all over the world.

A meeting of minds and shared passion for community development led to Sabri taking up tenancy in the Alliance Francaise building in Portlands, Mitchells Plain to broaden its impact in grassroots communities through entrepreneurship development and job creation.

SABRI can now, through Alliance Francaise, also encourage it’s entrepreneurs to learn French, which would enhance the effectiveness of the training and coaching provided by the CDI volunteers.

“Our programmes seek to develop young people and women to either set up and grow their own businesses, or to provide skills training and programmes that enhances their employability”, says Lynn Maggott, Sabri CEO.

Sabri’s services are available to the Mitchells Plain community and include training in general business skills, assistance with business creation and compliance, mentoring and coaching, and services such as accounting, business plan development, feasibility studies, as well as assistance with marketing plans and strategies.
