Youth to put vacant property to good use

A SOCIAL initiative that utilises vacant council properties is on track to roll out on December 1, World Aids Day.

The brain child of a young social entrepreneur and his team at Media Power, the project encourages young people to think out the box and see where they can startup businesses in their areas to create jobs.

The project revolves around road safety, environment, alcohol and drug abuse, crime and health (R.E.A.C.H).

The initiative will see community signs erected, displaying social responsible messages on allocated council sites.

Working with the various departments such as health, the campaign will tie up with the global health days, starting with World Aids Day, World Malaria Day and then Tuberculosis Day.

An example would be a message reminding TB sufferers to take their medication.

Corporate commercial advertising on the reverse panel will help fund the on-going campaigns.

Social Entrepreneur Dominique Rodrigues, son of businessman Lucky Michaels, heads the initiative.

“It’s an exciting initiative that will reach all South Africans and, as President Zuma indicated, emergency measures are needed to address the social problems being experienced by society today,” said Rodrigues.

National Youth Violence Prevention Week is in March 2014 and a campaign which addresses the C for crime in the R.E.A.C.H programme is planned.

Media Power is in talks to produce a TV reality show for young entrepreneurs, based on the BBC show Dragons Den, where young entrepreneurs present a business plan to an experienced team of business people.

This would influence and persuade young South Africans to believe in themselves.

More than half of SA's population is under the age of 35. That equates to more than 26 million people. More than 10 million are children under the age of 10.

“After two years of dedication and hard work we plan to launch the R.E.A.C.H Initiative with our social partners (Sanca and SABCOHA)," said Rodrigues.

“It’s an exciting time as the social impact of the campaign is two-fold. It addresses the issues of R.E.A.C.H and inspires the youth to fulfill their ambitions, creating new businesses and ultimately new jobs.”
