This year the competition has R1.7m prize money up for grabs. It aims to encourage the growth of small business and drive South Africa's economic growth.
The competition is open to registered small and medium-sized black-owned businesses active in the manufacturing, agriculture and trade or services sector. They must have been operating for more than 24 months to enter.
This year the overall winner will receive R200 000, while the category winners each take home R150 000. The first runner-up, in each category takes home R75 000 while second runners-up each receive R25 000 and other finalists receive R10 000.
Alllfinalists are also given exhibition space at the Business Opportunities and Franchise Expo.
This year has also seen the Business Investment Competition brought to TV screens through a spin-off business reality show called Nail the Pitch, which airs on Summit TV on Wednesdays at 18:30.
Nail the Pitch pits 2012 BIC winners and finalists against each other in a bid to win R50 000. Contestants present their marketing plans, ideas, dreams and growth plans to a panel of judges.
Haylene Liberty, CEO of the foundation said in a statement that it is wonderful to see small businesses succeed - particularly in the tough economic climate.
"For me, success is all the more rewarding when the hard work behind it is evident. And the small business owners who compete in the Business Investment Competition are the embodiment of hard work and dedication."
