Working from home poses time conundrum

Cape Town - Working remotely using basic technology has its ups and downs, says Fin24 user Richard Durrant.

But the ups far outweigh the downs, Richard says in response to Ian Mann's book review of Remote: Office Not Required, by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson.

Richard says he is currently in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape working on an iPad, and agrees 100% with the article. He lives in Johannesburg.

"I left the corporate office six years ago, am self employed and can operate successfully using some basic technology.

"I was born well BC (before computers) but have managed to master some of the basics and use email, iCloud, iPad, iPhone and Evernote for quite successfully!"

Richard says he seldom schedules a meeting with a client before 09:00 in the morning, and nothing later than 15:30 so as to miss the traffic. This way, he saves at least two to three hours a day by not commuting.

The downside, however, is that he is normally in the "office", which is in the spare bedroom, by 06:00 and puts in at least a 12-hour day most week days.

"Not working in a formal office, makes it sometimes difficult to know when to 'call it quits' for the day," he says.
