The use of industrial design

Deon Bussey is an industrial designer. Fin24 asked him to explain what this career actually involves:

I am an Industrial designer, a job most people have never heard of.

Think back to your early school days and the history lessons on the industrial revolution, many of us will probably not remember it.

This is the time in history were many of the things we take for granted these days had their start.

This was the era of inventions, dreams and possibilities. Items around us such as glass, paper, light and electricity.

These early inventors are considered the fathers of Industrial Design.  The industrial revolution can be seen as the pinnacle point of industrial design.

Since then industrial design as it is known today has moved forward at a tremendous pace with the invention of the computer in the mid 1980’s and software such as CAD (Computer Aided Design) soon following suit.

Life has become easier with inventions in the home, transport and business environments.

What is industrial design?

If I had to explain what industrial design is, it would be the creation and development with the use of applied art and science to optimising the functions, value, aesthetics and ergonomics of products for the mutual benefit of both users and manufacturers.

What do industrial designers do?

Industrial designers develop concepts through the analysis of ideas that are guided by the unique requirements of the client or manufacturer.

We are educated to prepare detailed and concise recommendations of the product” through drawings, renderings, models and verbal descriptions.

How industrial design affects you?

Well, more than you actually realise. Take, for instance, the iconic and prolific Apple product the iPod that revolutionised the MP3 player from an ugly, bulky, hard to use player to a beautiful piece of art.

This was designed by Sir Jonathan Ive an industrial designer.

There are some industrial designers who made such a prolific contribution to industrial design that their works are documented in history.

Examples are Raymond Loewy, who was responsible for the Schick electric razor and Electrolux refrigerators.

Oskar Barnack, who was the father of the 35mm camera, more specifically the Leica and Jonathan Ive, who designed many of Apple’s iconic products (MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air, iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and iPad Mini).

Without realising it many of the products you use in your day to day lives have been worked on by an industrial designer, whether it is the aesthetics and usability of the product or the way it was engineered and manufactured.

We are the “people” who make your lives easier when it comes to using products.
