Rainbow Academy – an answer to job creation

Cape Town - The Rainbow Academy in Cape Town is an NGO for the creative industries of performing arts, hospitality and tourism.

It is the brainchild of Denay Willie, businessperson Frank Gormley and marketer Alison McCutcheon.

Primarily performing arts students audition to participate in a one year training and job placement programme.

This combination equips the artists with the necessary business and life skills to build sustainable, entrepreneurial careers, while developing the untapped talent in Cape Town.

It also promotes the cultural heritage of South Africa and leverages the skills training and employment opportunities arising from Cape Town as a tourist destination.

On November 30 the academy will present a gala fundraising evening for the school on the pool deck of the Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel & Spa.

The academy relies heavily on sponsorship and donations in order to provide less privileged youth with the chance of a sustainable future.

Auditions are already being held for the 2014 intake.

“The talent that we have seen emerge has been truly inspiring but it is also the willingness to learn the business side which has taken these students on to a different level,” said Willie.

“They know that there is never a guarantee of ongoing work in the performing arts industry, but because they are now equipped with business skills and work experience they leave the school with a job and new found confidence.“

Delecia Forbes, the academy's arts administrator, believes that by providing the correct mix of skills training and work placement in the arts, creative and related industries of tourism and hospitality, the Rainbow Academy is filling a huge gap.

"By adding 'new strings to their bows' these youngsters can show how sustained employment and income generation opportunities are the end result,” she said.

Desmond O'Connor, general manager of the Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel & Spa, said the Rainbow Academy is giving these youngsters practical experience that makes them employable.

The cost of the fundraiser is R400 per person or R4 000 per table of ten. The dress code is formal or traditional and more information is available from denay@rainbowacademy.co.za.
