Fin24 user Wesley Diphoko shares how his thirst for knowledge pushed him to help others get access to free education. He writes:
AS A board member of the Cape Information Technology Initiative and Career Planet I am acutely aware of the skills development challenge in South Africa.
I've combined my understanding of the information economy and experience in working at the University of the Western Cape to develop Kaya Labs.
Kaya Labs identified Kayamandi, a township in Stellenbosch, as a lab environment for a pilot project, aiming at providing practical education and training through technology.
The project enables young people to access the best education from leading academic institutions and international experts in design, technology and business.
This is done through sourcing online content from institutions such as Harvard, MIT, TED, Techonomy and Stanford University and making it available on its online platform KayaLabs.co and offline platforms such as the lab environment in Kayamandi.
Kaya Labs also enables technology graduates to gain experience by working on real life technology projects by developing technology solutions based on insights gained from their time spent in the Kayamandi township of Stellenbosch.
Our project is now in the process of enabling young people in townships to access international education for free.
We are now planning to implement the project in townships in Cape Town.
