Direct selling a job spinner

AT A time when many other industries were declining, one sector created income generating opportunities for over a million South Africans.

Last year the direct selling industry, which includes brands such as Avon, Justine and Sh'zen, bucked the downward trend and showed growth, says the Direct Selling Association of South Africa (DSASA.)

Some of the reasons for this are:

  • Experience, age, gender, education levels and training are not a prerequisite for entry. Many very successful sales consultants are past retirement age.
  • The amount of money you need to get started can be as little as R200.
  • Working hours are flexible and most direct sellers work from their own homes.
  • Tight economic conditions and retrenchments have made entry into the formal employment sector more difficult and direct selling offers a viable alternative for creating sustainable income.

The following important tips come from high achieving sales consultants for Pres Les, one of the oldest and most successful direct selling companies in South Africa.

Things to consider when choosing the company you will represent:

  • Sell a quality product that carries an extensive guarantee.
  • Consider the potential income in relation to the effort, i e what can you realistically expect to earn in return for the hours of work involved.
  • Consider the possible costs involved,  such as a cellphone, laptop, travelling and hosting parties.
  • Be sure to select a company that is a member of the DSASA and that has a reputation for integrity, trust and reliability (ask your friends, colleagues and family if they have had dealings with the company).

Do your research and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Questions to ask before joining a direct selling company:

  • How does the order and payment system work? You have to know exactly what will happen if you make a sale and when you will receive your money.
  • How much money do I have to pay upfront?
  • Do I have to collect and deliver stock?
  • Am I required to buy product myself to remain active in the company?
  • Who can I or my customers contact if there is  a query or a problem?
  • How much commission will I earn per sale?
  • Does the company offer ongoing training?
  • Am I required to attend regular meetings?
  • Does the company offer incentives and opportunities for growth for consultants, and what does thist entail?
