WATCH: Will there be an EU left in two years’ time?

Cape Town - Britain's exit from the European Union (EU) could trigger the possible exit of more countries from the bloc, according to an analyst.

Local immigration lawyer Gary Eisenberg told News24Live in a studio interview that it would be interesting to see how many countries will remain part of the EU after the landmark vote by Britain to leave the bloc.

The result has divided the country with Northern Ireland, Scotland and London the only areas not to have voted for Brexit.

More than 3.6 million people voted in a 2014 referendum for Scotland to be an independent country from the UK, but 55% voted against it.

Now there is growing concern over calls for another referendum on Scottish independence following Brexit.

"It is going to be fascinating, not only to check what the result of the second Scottish referendum will be, but other European countries have threatened exactly the same thing," said Eisenberg.

However, he also pondered on whether there will be an EU left in two years’ time when the UK is expected to officially cut ties with the bloc.

"[This] will determine how many countries will have a referendum - perhaps a second referendum, perhaps a first".

Commenting on Scotland, Eisenberg said: "I think the Brexit result will feed nationalism in Scotland because that I think is the natural backlash."

"I have a feeling that Scotland will become independent."
