WATCH: Alec Hogg on why Brexit could be a good thing

Cape Town - The world is moving against a vote for big government and big business, and rather towards a vote for democracy, Alec Hogg told Fin24 on Friday in reaction to the Brexit result.

People are taking back their sovereignty, in his view.

He sees the surprise result in the UK as the result of an accumulation of various factors over the years.

"Twenty years ago some authors have already predicted the world is evolving. The power equation is changing from "big" to 'small'," said Hogg. "The future is going to belong to the small and nimble and not the Goliaths."

He said in the long term people want democracy and more control over their own outcome.

"We see it even in what is going on in Tshwane right now - even the Arab Spring was an example. Individuals don't want to be told what to do by big government," said Hogg.

"The fourth industrial revolution is something different. It is not the guy at the top of the company making the rules anymore. People who vote are looking at their own circumstances. The British have taken a longer term view. They voted for a brand new future."
