Johannesburg – National Treasury has refuted media claims that it is investigating a new South African Revenue Service (Sars) so-called rogue unit.
Treasury issued a statement on Tuesday in which it said that although it is not investigating the "rogue" unit, the department will be “looking into” the matter.
This follows reports in the Sunday Times this past week that Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane has a new "rogue" unit, similar to the one which targeted Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. According to the report, the unit will work with the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority and police crime intelligence.
“The department is in the process of looking into the matter and intends to seek clarification from Sars on the alleged unit. Currently there is no so-called investigation on the matter,” the statement read.
Treasury spokesperson Yolisa Tyantsi told Fin24 that the department had learnt about the rogue unit through the media, on Sunday.
She said that Treasury would ask Moyane about it at the two bodies' next meeting.
