Top 5 on Fin24: Massive Trillian whistleblower leak, BLSA kicks out Eskom, Transnet and SA has new bank

Cape Town - In case you missed it, here is a roundup of Thursday's top 5 reads on Fin24:

Whistleblower: How Gupta-linked firm scored big by connecting officials and consultants

A new investigative report by amaBhungane has revealed how Gupta-linked firm Trillian earned lucrative consulting fees by allegedly facilitating access to top officials for consulting multinationals McKinsey and Oliver Wyman. The report is based, in part, in a trove of documents leaked this week to a whistleblower site by the former CEO of Trillian Management Consulting, Bianca Goodson.

Goodson, in her resignation letter, described her brief tenure at the firm as the "most disempowering that I have experienced in my career" and said her bosses ignored her input and simply expected her to “execute instructions”.

SA's new bank takes paperless banking to the people

South Africa's newest bank, TymeDigital by Commonwealth Bank SA, said it will live and die by the experiences of its customers.

Bank CEO Sandile Shabalala said TymeDigital would offer South Africans a total new way of banking, making banking accessible, convenient and affordable.

The bank is scheduled to market its first banking product to the public by the middle of 2018 and will not have specific branches, rather using kiosks in shops as its customers contact points.

BLSA kicks 'corrupt' Eskom and Transnet out

Business Leadership South Africa on Thursday booted out state-owned entities Eskom and Transnet for their involvement in corruption and state capture with immediate effect.

The announcement comes as BLSA launched its #BusinessBelieves campaign in Cape Town, where it signed a “contract” with South Africa, pledging to do even more to create jobs and grow and transform the economy.

The latest suspensions follow auditing firm KPMG SA's suspension for the role it played in facilitating state capture and the misleading SARS "rogue unit" report.

Just hours of it was suspended from Business Leadership South Africa, however, Transet said it had not renewed its membership, and could therefore not be kicked out.

Sell off 'alcoholic' SAA and fire Myeni, Maimane tells Gigaba

As SAA's R1.8bn debt repayment deadlines nears, the DA called on SAA chair Dudu Myeni to immediately step down, and the Public Protector to investigate Myeni's role in the national carrier's "institutional decay"

"The only way to help this alcoholic, is to cut off its funds," Maimane told journalists in Johannesburg, adding "SAA is a bottomless pit".

Mkhize as Zuma's successor?

As the battle to succeed President Jacob Zuma as leader of the ANC grows increasingly fractious, party treasurer general Zweli Mkhize is emerging as a possible compromise choice to keep the continent’s oldest political movement from tearing itself apart.

While the race for the top job is widely seen as a head-to-head contest between Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Mkhize, a 61-year-old medical doctor, has two advantages: he’s stayed above the infighting and has strong support in his home region of KwaZulu-Natal.
