SAA appoints maintenance chief as acting CEO

Johannesburg - South African Airways (SAA) appointed Musa Zwane, the head of the state-owned carrier’s maintenance unit, as acting chief executive officer to replace Thuli Mpshe, who held the position on a temporary basis for less than four months.

Zwane was appointed “due to operational demands within the business,” SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said by text message on Tuesday. The company plans to make an announcement later this week regarding the position of chief financial officer after Wolf Meyer resigned to pursue other interests, he said.

SAA named human-resources manager Mpshe as acting CEO after Nico Bezuidenhout returned to his role as head of the company’s low-cost unit Mango in July.

Zwane is the seventh permanent or acting CEO at SAA in less than four years, if Bezuidenhout’s two stints in the position are counted separately.

Other departures this year include chief strategy officer Barry Parsons, who left the company in July, and director Anthony Dixon, who resigned this month.

Meyer’s departure was “mutually agreed” and the parties have decided not to release any further statements on the subject, Tlali said.

SAA, which has been surviving on government-guaranteed loans, delayed its annual general meeting in September while the unprofitable carrier works to meet conditions set by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene before he’ll consider a request for a new credit guarantee.
