Johannesburg - The 2015/16 Auditor General report on the local government audit outcomes revealed that 49 municipalities obtained clean audits, while 25 received disclaimed opinions.
The Auditor General assessed 263 municipalities and 51 municipal entities. The worst performing provinces were the North West, Free State and Northern Cape. While the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape had the greatest proportion of municipalities of clean audits. Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo showed the greatest improvements.

Auditor General Kimi Makwetu emphasised the need for consequences for non-compliance with regulations. Non-compliance with supply chain management accounted for 98% or R16.5bn of irregular spend.
Makwetu explained that accountability will not only ensure better audit outcomes but ensure that municipalities improved service delivery to their citizens.
