Hlaudi highest paid SABC official with R4.2m

Cape Town - Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the SABC, whose appointment was set aside by the Supreme Court of Appeal last week, received a whopping R4.197m annual salary package in the 2015/16 financial year. This makes him the highest paid official at the public broadcaster.

The SABC’s latest financial results showed that the state-owned entity made a loss of R411m in the past financial year, but despite this state of affairs, Motsoeneng received a salary increase of close to half a million rand. This is up from R3.784m in the previous financial year.

The annual report showed that Motsoeneng received:

  • a basic annual salary of R2.554m;
  • a 13th cheque of R213 000;
  • R945 000’s worth of expenses and other allowances; and
  • employee benefits (contribution to pension fund and medical aid) valued at R485 000.

This brings his total salary package to R4.197m – close to R600 000 more than that of SABC Group CEO Frans Matlala.

DA Communications spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said in a statement that the size of Motsoeneng’s salary package “lends credence to the suspicion that Motsoeneng served as de facto CEO of the public broadcaster”.

“This is over and above the almost R1m increase he received during the 2014/15 financial year,” Van Damme said.

On Thursday during a media briefing, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe called upon the public broadcaster's board to abide by the court ruling that had set aside Motsoeneng’s appointment as COO and not disrespect its decision by reappointing him to another senior executive position of general executive of corporate affairs.

Attempts to subvert the court’s decision through “legally suspect interpretations” border on violating the constitutional principle of legality and challenge the judicial authority of South Africa’s courts, Radebe said.
